| Along with the development of international exchanges, cross-cultural interactionoccurs more frequently in people’s life. Interpreters, as bilingualists, bridge the gapbetween people of different languages and cultures. Meanwhile, politeness, as we allknow, plays a significant role in communication. Yet different cultures have differentunderstanding and requirements on politeness. This thesis sets out to explore howinterpreters, the coordinators and interactors in cross-cultural communication, utilizetheir bilingual and cultural knowledge to recognize and handle polite information so asto achieve successful communication.Based on the author’s own interpreting experiences, the thesis summarizes majorpoliteness differences between English and Chinese cultures combining theory andpractice. Under the guidance of Leech, Gu Yueguo and other scholars’ politenesstheories, which they put forward specifically according to English and Chinesecultures, interpreters can appreciate, comprehend and handle polite information in bothlanguages and therefore create a harmonious atmosphere. Finally, the thesis raises, forthe purpose of politeness, three commonly-used interpreting methods, namely addition,deletion and modification, and further illustrates the applicable context respectively.The author hopes to arouse more attention to the importance of politeness ininterpreting. It is also the author’s wish that future researches and practice couldaccumulate abundant materials so as to find more applicable interpreting methods. |
