A Study On AVBV Based On GC Model

AVBV construction is one of the common constructions in oral Chinese, whichis concise and comprehensive. Due to its popularity in daily communication, lots ofscholars have studied this construction from different angles. Restricted to inductionand description, these studies mainly focus on the classification, semantic, syntacticand pragmatic functions, which seem to be static and superficial. Although from theperspective of Construction Grammar, some scholars have given deeper explanationabout the formation of the construction, it is still far away from a systemicinvestigation on the formation mechanism of AVBV construction.Since this construction has large practical and academic values, and in thoseprevious studies exist some limitations, we intend to do further researches on thisconstruction from the perspective of Cognitive Grammar. This paper constructs anew integrated model-GC Model, based on Grammaticalization and ConceptualBlending Theory, to provide a unified and simplified account for the formationmechanism of AVBV construction. Based on the previous classification of AVBV,the paper divides157AVBV expressions from CCL into two categories: selectionand negation, then analyses these two categories respectively by GC Model. Theformation mechanism of the construction is that Grammaticalization makes theAVBV construction into being from original sentence and the emergent meaning,such as indifference, impatience, anger and so on is from Conceptual Blending.This study can be subdivided into five chapters:Chapter One concentrates on a general introduction to the study, which includesthe motivation, the objectives, the methodology and data collection as well as thelayout of this paper.Chapter Two gives the literature review of the previous researches on AVBV,consisting of the views from Modern Chinese Grammar and Construction Grammar,from which the limitations of the studies have been presented. In Chapter Three, on the basis of the limitations of the previous researches, thepaper puts forward a new theoretical solution to the gap. The theoretical frameworkGC is constructed on the cognitive theories of Grammaticalization and ConceptualBlending Theory.In Chapter Four, we carry out in-depth data analysis and discussion. First, thedata is classified into two categories. And then based on the GC Model, theformation mechanism of each category is discussed in detail.Chapter Five comes to the conclusion, including the main findings andimplications of the study on the one hand, and the limitations and suggestions for thefurther research on the other.
