Narrow linewidth lasers have good application prospect,so that the development of lasers and laser systems with an extremely narrow linewidth accelerate very rapidly.The kHz magnitude's linewidth laser has been very common.Recently, less than 1kHz linewidth fiber lasers have been commercialized. The character of laser linewidth is an important parameter to the light source with narrow linewidh. In many measurement systems,such as fiber velocity interferometer, fiber temperature measurement systems, stress-strain measurement and coherent detecting systems, the character of laser linewidth determines the accuracy of the system.In this paper, theory of laser linewidth has been summarized. Presents and compares the current linewidth measurement techniques,especially for narrow linewidth lasers.Delayed self-heterodyne methods for measuring laser linewidth has been studied deeply. The influence of the length of delay fiber or delayed time to the measurement results have been discussed. System based on the virtual instrument technique was designed,the hardware is based on GPIB and software is developed on LabVIEW.This system can sample and analyze the measurement,the power spectrum of the photo current could be shown through processing the measurement, spectrum lineshape of beat is identical with that of the laser under tested,and the linewidth was calculated by the Lorentz fitting method. an experimental setup is constructed to measure IPG's laser linewidth.Results show that the system is feasible, fast and accurate, and it has a good effect on engineering application.automatic test system for laser linewidth measurement had not yet been reported by far.
