Laser refabricating technology has been developed for repairing of important engineering equipment in recent years. Powder feeder is one of important devices in laser refabricating system, its performance had great influence on the quality of the cladding layer. Recently, with the development of nanomaterials, many kinds of micro-nanometer level powder materials were used to refine the microstructures, diminish the stress, and enhance the strength, the hardness and corrosion resistance ability. Because superfine powder had minute size, the aggregates of powders could be easily formed. In the application, superfine powder were usually mixed with general powder in proportion firstly, and then were fed to laser molten pool by general powder feeder. As a result, the uniformity of powder and the cladding quality couldn't be ensured by this use method, and the proportion of the superfine powder couldn't be large. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new kind of powder feeder to solve the feeding difficulties of superfine powder and mixed powder.In the process of designation, there were two important questions, the delivery of superfine powder and mixed powder. In order to solve the superfine delivery question, we developed a kind of superfine powder atomization mechanism. After atomization, the distance between particles increased evidently, the interactions decreased distinctly, the aggregates were avoided. The powder-mixer was designed for mixed powder delivery, there, superfine powder and ordinary powder were mixed uniformly, and output from the outlet.According to above theories, a new kind of double-hopper powder feeder with gas was designed. It composes of feeding part, gas part, control part and body case. Performance experiments and laser cladding experiments were performed, and plenty of data was analyzed. It was shown that good stability was possessed in the process of delivery of powder; powder feed rate was decided by wheel speed; air flux had small influence, the better interval was 3L/min~8L/min; the distant delivery ability was good in 25 meter distance; technological parameter had great influence on cladding quality; powder utilization rate could reach 62%.The powder feeder solved the two questions, and had better performance, it was competent for the industrial application.
