Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a n-type direct band-gap (Eg~3.37 eV at room temperature) semiconductor with thermal and chemical stability and other desirable properties. Due to the large exciton binding energy of 60 meV, which ensures the high efficient excitonic emission at room temperature, it is regarded as one of the most promising materials for fabricating efficient ultraviolet (UV) blue light emitting device. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in quasi-one-dimensional nanostructural systems because of their numerous potential applications in various areas, such as materials sciences, electronics, optics, magnetism and energy storage. Recently, the anodic alumina nanoporous structure templates have received considerable attention in synthetic nanostructure materials due to its several unique structure properties, such as controllable pore diameter, extremely narrow size distribution for pore diameters and their intervals, and ideally cylindrical shape of pores. Using a variety of methods, they have been extensively used to fabricate nanometer-size fibrils, rods, wires, and tubules of metal, semiconductors, carbons, and other solid materials. In this dissertation, we synthesized the arrays of semiconductor ZnO nanowires by oxidizing the metal Zn that we electrodeposited in the hexagonally arranged nanochannels of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs). The structure characteristics of ZnO nanowires are investigated. In Chapter One, the properties of ZnO materials and their methods of fabrication are discussed. We also report the research and development of the synthesis of nano-materials with template, especially using the anodic alumina membranes. The second chapter was mainly about the preparation of porous alumina . The samples were fabricated by anodization in C2H2O4 and H2SO4 respectively. The morphology of all samples was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observation. The template used in direct current electro...
