LD pumped Nd:YLF solid state laser has been well developed in recent years, particularly, LD pumped Nd:YLF passively Q-switched laser could produce short pulse width and high peak power and have a wide variety of applications such as measuring, sensing, nonlinear optics, laser matter interaction processes and many other fields. Based on the units design of the laser, the physical and chemical characteristics and laser characteristic of the laser crystal Nd:YLF were discussed, at the same time,the saturable absorption properties of the Q-switched crystal Cr4+:YAG were discussed. Based on the whole structure of the laser, the properties of LD and the selection of coupling optics system were discussed. Then the theory and optimization of passively Q-switched laser were researched. With reasonable design of the laser, when the pumping power was 1.6W, using c-axis Nd:YLF crystal, 1053nm laser with the CW output power 443mW and pulse peak power 3101W was obtained, using a-axis Nd:YLF crystal,1047nm laser with the CW output power 593mW and pulse peak power 1665W was obtained. Under the same pumping condition, the comparisons between 1053nm and 1047nm of each output results of the lasers were made. Then by frequency doubling for 1053nm or 1047nm, the green laser of 526nm or 523nm was obtained.
