The rapid development and convergence of multimedia technologies, network technologies and wireless communication technologies is an important trend in the Information Technologies industry in the recent years. The traditional Internet mainly provides data services and the wireless communication mainly provides speech services. The rapid update of multimedia technologies enables the needs that the services of text, speech, graphics, image and video are integrated into the fields of Internet and wireless communication to increase. Video applications have the characters such as the huge data amount and the real time etc. They are challenging and become the research focus for the academe and the industry. This paper summarizes the main technologies on image and video transmission over Internet and wireless channels. They are:1. The traditional coding technologies and the scalable coding technologies are introduced in the view of image and video compression. Discrete Cosine Transform, Wavelet Transform, Matching Pursuits, Fine Granularity Scalability and Progressive Fine Granularity Scalability are particularly analyzed.2. Error control and congestion control are introduced in the view of network transmission control. FEC, retransmission, error-resilient encoding, error concealment, rate control and rate shaping are particularly analyzed.3. The protocols related to video transport including network-layer protocol such as IP, transport protocols such as UDP, TCP, RTP and RTCP, session control protocols such as RTSP, RSVP and SIP are introduced. The protocol stack in the framework of end-to-end transport architecture for streaming MPEG-4 video over the Internet is also introduced.4. The bit-plane coding based overall DCT is presented and some experiments are done. The experimental results are given and analyzed. The network simulation environment, Network Simulator 2, is introduced and a simple network simulation experiment is done by it.
