| In view of the educational reform and development around the world,well-developed nations focus more attention on the education based on thetraditional culture of their own and take the promotion of their traditional culturesand national spirits as a key portion of their educational efforts. Therefore, it isnot only a reality-based choice but also represents the tendency of education inthe new era to develop folk arts into school-based curricula. With the promotionof a new round of curriculum reform and the establishment of a curriculumsystem composed of the national, regional and school levels, the school hasbeen accorded with greater curriculum autonomy and school-based curriculumdevelopment has also become a major feature of modern school education. Inthe course of curriculum development, many schools direct great efforts to theexploration and exploitation of local natural and culture resources, theenhancement of the connection between art education and traditional cultureand the promotion of the cultural atmosphere on the campus.According to the postmodern curriculum development theory, thecurriculum development should be aimed at the student development. However, this basic requirement is often neglected. In the actual development, teachersoften focus on their own interests and develop the curriculum at their owndiscretion. Some teachers compile a textbook with whatever available, or takethe school-based curricula as interest-based or extra-curricular activities.Curricula thus developed either contain outdated teaching materials or fail toreflect up-to-date teaching theories. Those problems fail the original intention ofschool-based curriculum development. In view of the foregoing problemsinvolved in the development of school-based art curricula for senior middleschools, this paper focuses on the development of Charming Paper-weaving asa school-based curriculum as an attempt to innovatively explore new teachingtechniques, establish a teaching mode in reference to the characteristics ofsenior middle school students’ paper-weaving activities, develop a set ofteaching materials for a school-based curriculum tailored to the development ofthe school where the author teaches and bring out the charms of the traditionalweaving arts in the context of this new era.The aim of the paper-weaving curriculum is not only to enable students tocomplete a number of weaving works, but more importantly, to cultivate thestudents’ abilities and qualities to formulate a master plan and developprocedures and techniques and to encourage them to transplant theprocedures, techniques, methods and philosophic notions to the acquisition ofother knowledge and skills in their studies and life. Finally, it is the private hopeof the author that the curriculum can be developed into a tool of equippingstudents with useful learning styles and thinking modes. |
