| Since the birth of the animation in early 20th century, over a hundred years have passed. By now, Chinese animation too has already passed its 82nd birthday. After a century's development, the animation has changed from its prototypal pattern into a relatively mature level, and established its status in visual arts as a unique and independent art form. The rapid growth of commercial interests of the animation promoted the emerging of innovative forms and art styles in great variety. The importance of the art style of an animation work is much more considered nowadays. This is the background of the research. This thesis consists of four chapters. In Chapter 1, a general conceptualization is made about the animation and animation art style, also included is the analysis of the research and theories of other researchers. The theoretical argument is mainly based on the following three chapters. A study of the relationships between the animation and fine art is the start of the whole research and makes up the basis of further analysis. Chapter 2 mainly argues on how the two main traditions of the visual art pattern——the realism and the expressionism traditions have their influence on the art style of the animation aesthetically, scientifically and technically, and in this way clarifies the inheriting relations between the art style of the animation and the art style of visual arts. This chapter inquires into the tracing of the animation and made a thorough study in the influence the visual art has on the animation with typical examples, and summed up the ways how different art patterns are used in the animation art styling. In Chapter 3, an analysis in the signifying tendency in the adaptation of art styles from the visual art to the animation, which proved the ultimate position of motion in the art styling of an animation. The signifying tendency is differently stressed in different kind of animations, so in the latter part of Chapter 3, this question is further argued among different patterns of animations, especially the digital 3D animations. In Chapter 2 and 3, the study is mainly with the perspective of fine art and the cinema arts, representing the visual and narrative aspects. However, in Chapter two a different point of view is used to look into the influence of visual psychology and watching habit of the audience in this interdisciplinary art form based on the fine art and the cinema. Exaggeration and distortion are two widely used principles in animation art styling, they are taken from the comics and gradually take up a function of"Sense Revision"in the animation. Although the pursue and innovation in animation art styles can never violate the basic rules of the visual psychology, it has a great influence on the watching habit and anticipation of the animation. Further more, the watching habit raised by former animation makers could become the model for successors. In this thesis an exploration is made of the formation and development of the style of the animation with the perspective of fine art, and of the theory of how the art style should be designed. Case study method is basically used in this thesis. With the creation, formation and evolution of animation art style as the main object, a study is made from three aspects: the fundamental sources, the internal mechanism and the external force of the creation and development of the art style of the animation, in order to promote the answer to the following question: How to produce an appropriate art style for a work of animation and ensure the essential value of the style in the success of the work. In order to cover a wider range of examples and to draw a better fitting conclusion, great effort is made to balance the examples and analysis in commercial animations and artistic animations used while exemplifying the argument. And all the work is aimed at promoting better theoretical basis and practical reference for the rapid-growing animation art. |
