Mainly used in underwater communication systems, watertight cables are the key components of submarine, sonar, underwater acoustic transducers, underwater robots and other equipments. The transmitter in vessels and the antenna at the outside ships are always connected by watertight cables. To ensure the reliability of communication and the safety of submarines, watertight cables should have excellent electrical and watertight performance and resistance to seawater corrosion. They solve the problem of signal transmission to meet the requirement of Navy's deep underwater communication. China Electronics Technology Group Corporation twenty-third Institute has been engaged in the development of watertight cables, and has produced a variety of watertight cables for the Navy. These watertight submarine cables have been widely used in 03X,,09X submarines, YLX torpedoes, long-range anti-ship missiles Eagle-62,052X destroyers, submarine JL-2 nuclear missiles,081 hunting minesweepers ship system,048 engineering and so on. Now, watertight cables have applications in military and commercial fields.As an important component of control and communication system of modern ships (especially for submarines), watertight cables have great effects on the safety, reliability, advance and combat capability of ships. The longitudinal watertight property of cables can prevent water leakage from the cable and ensure the safety of watertight bulkheads. And furthermore, local damage of watertight cables will not lead to the corrosion of whole cables and invalidation of sophisticated electrical equipments. The properties of water blocking materials dominantly influence the application of watertight cables. This study develops the watertight materials with good gap filling and processing under the condition of high water pressure.The watertight materials have attracted many interests and undergone great development in several foreign countries. Some watertight materials have good compatibility with insulation materials and metal materials of cables and do not influence the performance of cables obviously at high frequency. These watertight materials cannot be obtained because they are related to the military secret, or the company's core technology.Some ointments and hot melt adhesives are now used as watertight materials in the cable industry of China. They always not only have bad processability but also affect the properties of the cables. Watertight ointments are generally composed of mineral oil, water-swelling polymer resins (such as sodium polyacrylate), and starch. The mineral oil affects the watertight and electrical performance of cables because it can swell the polyolefin insulation materials. Before hot melt adhesives are filled into watertight cables, they need thermal treatments, which cannot be implemented in some kinds of cables. In addition, some silicone gels are now also applied in watertight cables. However, their high price prevents them from extensive applications. All above mentioned restricts the development of watertight cables.
