State vector, an approach to earthquake prediction, was advanced by Xiangchu Yin(2004). It is an idea from statistical physics to describe continuous physical field coarsely. The whole continuous physical field can be divided into N regions, and some kind of physical parameter in each region construct N dimension state vector. Evolution of state vector could describe the state of earthquake generation quantitatively, and could predict the macroscopical failure. In this paper, we studied the statistical feature of state vector before large earthquakes in China mainland, Taiwan region and Southern California of America. Four defined parameters of state vector were studied in each region.1. Research data: Earthquake catalogue of China is from CENC(China Earthquake Networks Center) and earthquake catalogue of Southern California is from ANSS(Advanced National Seismic System). In order to avoid the influence of seismic monitoring ability, seismic location precision etc., magnitude thresholds in each region were considered. For China mainland and Taiwan region, the minimum magnitude is chosen as M3.0 and the maximum magnitude is chosen of that 2.0 less than the object earthquake; For California region, the minimum magnitude is chosen as M2.0 and the maximum magnitude is chosen of that 0.5 less than the object earthquake.2. Research ideas: In order to study the evolution of state vector parameters(say state vector modulus M , angle ? of state vector (V|â†')t-Δt and (V|â†')t, modulusΔM of increment of state vector, angleφc of state vector (V|â†')t and isoclinal vector (V|â†')t,we choose the square region with scope of L°(longitude)×L°(latitude) around the epicenter, and the scope is divided into L×L sub-regions with 1°×1°,so a state vector with L2 dimension was contructed. Physical parameter v i (say the logarithm of earthquake energy Log(E), the sum number of earthquakes, earthquake energy E, Benioff strain , linear scale of source region , superficial scale of souce were selected in every sub-region). In this study, time window was 1 year and time step was 30 days. In order to examine the influence of scan scope to the results, the scan scope varies from 3°×3°to 11°×11°.3. Research result:A. 27 earthquakes (M≥7.0) in China mainland since 1970 were studied. The results show that apparent anomalies occur during 3 years before 22 earthquakes out of 27(81.4%). The results also show that for earthquakes(M≥7.0) in China mainland, the best scan scope varies from 3°×3°to 11°×11°.B. 17 earthquakes (M≥7.0) in China Taiwan region since 1970 were studied. The results show that apparent anomalies occur during 3 years before 15 earthquakes out of 17(88.2%). The results also show that for earthquakes(M≥7.0) in China Taiwan region, the best scan scope varies from 3°×3°to 8°×8°.C. 7 earthquakes (M≥6.5) in California and its adjacent area(32°N—40°N, 114°W—125°W)since 1970 were studied. The results show that apparent anomalies occur during 3 years...
