Three systems of ionic liquids(9in total)including short chain ionic liquids, alkylimidazole ionic liquids with different side chain length and polyether ionic liquids weresynthesized and the Chemical structure was characterized by FT-IR and1HNMR. ModifiedEP splines were prepared by blending with ionic liquids respectively and the chemicalstructure was characterized by FT-IR. The thermal performance and apparent morphologyand fracture morphology observation of the modified EP were analyzed by DSC and SEMrespectively and the process conditions were optimized. The effect of ionic liquids of thestructure characteristics and its content on the mechanical property including impact strength,bending strength and tensile strength were studied and the mechanism of the modificationwas also discussed.The results showed that the ionic liquids were the target products withhigh yield. The impact and tensile property of EP modified by three systems of ionic liquidswere improved. In the system of short chain lonic liquids: when the mass ratio of ILs and EPwas1:10, the kind of ionic liquids of the [AeMIM]Br got the best results to modify the EP.The impact strength of EP was increased from2.065KJ/m2to3.245KJ/m2, the tensilestrength from44.56MPa to52.77MPa, but the bending strength was decreased slightly andthe thermal decomposition temperature was also decreased. Under the same conditions, therewere some rules on the influence of alkyl imidazole ionic liquids with different side chainlength on the performance and thermal mechanical property of EP. The impact strength andthe tensile strength and the thermal decomposition temperature of the modified EP weregradually increased, the bending strength was gradually reduced with the increase of thelength of the side chain. In the system of EP modified by polyether ionic liquids: the effect ofEP modified by the polyether ionic liquids was better than the polyether pyridinium ionicliquids. The impact strength of the modified EP was increased from2.065KJ/m2to4.246KJ/m2and the tensile strength was increased from44.56MPa to54.88Mpa. There wasan effect of the molecular weight of ILs on mechanical property of the modified EP. The bestmodified effect was showed when the molecular weight of the polyether imidazolium ionicliquids was about1000. The EP modified by polyether imidazole ionic liquids showed thebest results when three systems of ionic liquids were compared at the same conditions. Theinfluences of the amount of ionic liquids had an big effect on property of the epoxy resin.With the increase of the amount of ionic liquids, the impact strength of modified EP was increased. When the amount of the ionic liquids was40%, the increase of the impactstrength tended to smooth. But the decomposition temperature was decreased with theincrease in the amount of the ionic liquids. The SEM showed that surface morphology ofionic liquids modified EP appeared agglomerate. There was no brittle fracture tendency andthe impact fracture surface was uneven compared with the original EP. The result showedthat ionic liquids was uniformly dispersed in the epoxy resin system and the compositebecame uniform by the reaction with epoxy resin Therefore, the mechanical property of theepoxy resin composite material were improved.
