Plant phosphoinositide-specific phospholipases C (PI-PLCs) function in severalessential plant processes associated with either development or environmental stress. Inthis report, we examined the expression patterns of TaPLC1under drought and highsalinity stress at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. TaPLC1mRNA wasexpressed in all wheat organs examined. U73122and Edelfosine a PI-PLCs inhibitor, impaired seedling growth and enhanced seedling sensitivity to drought and high salinitystress. Though TaPLC1expression in wheat was lowest at the seedling stage, it wasstrongly induced under conditions of stress. When6-day-old wheat seedlings weretreated with200mM NaCl or20%(w/v) PEG6000for6or12h, respectively, theTaPLC1transcript level increased by16-fold compared to the control. Western blottingshowed that the TaPLC protein concentration was also maintained at a high level from24to48h during stress treatment. Together, our results indicate the possible biologicalfunctions of TaPLC1in regulating seedling growth and the response to drought andsalinity stress.
