Nowadays, China is becoming the economic center of the world. "Design for China" has been more and more necessary as the buying power of the Chinese has been rising and China is regarded as the major consumer group by most of the world-famous brands. The result is that to find an effective design method and outline based on Chinese culture is very urgent and waiting for being solved as soon as possible. The objective of the paper is to set up a relationship between the cross-cultural studies and design based on understanding, which can make the products better fit the Chinese culture and more convenient for Chinese people. The meaning of the paper is to localize the design of network products, through the method of analyzing each of the single Chinese traditional elements and then summarize and improve them to the level of culture understanding and culture dimensions. Based on the user-oriented design method and the theory of cross-cultural studies, the paper abstracts four culture dimensions in the design areas and set up a widely-usable design reference on the basis of the Chinese culture. Moreover, the paper carries out an unique research on the culture differences reflecting by the head portraits on SNS using the method of cross-cultural studies.Furthermore, to meet the need of Chinese people, the author makes the design method into practice and developed Engkoo, a website for English-learners. This network product that integrates many localization design elements, is devoted to help Chinese people learn English and won the second prize of 2009 China R&D Engineering Award.
