Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET), composed of wireless nodes as the main computer and router, is a wireless multi-hop network without pre-established infrastructure. All nodes of the network have equal status and functions. The MANET has no central controller and is fully distributed architecture. Because of its convenience, quickness and robust, the MANET can be applied to disaster relief, military mobile communications, such as non-communication infrastructure of the provisional occasions.Ad Hoc network's key technologies relate to each level of OSI model, there are lots of research problems. Routing technology is particularly important in these problems, while routing technology is also one of the most important factors which impact the overall performance of the network. Traditional routing protocols used in wired networks is no longer adapt to dynamic changes in Ad Hoc network topology, we must design new Ad Hoc network routing protocols. In accordance with the working mechanism of the existing routing protocol, the existing Ad Hoc network routing protocols can be divided into four categories: proactive routing protocols, on-demand routing protocols, hybrid routing protocols and the routing protocols using geographic information. Proactive routing protocols play good performance when the Ad Hoc network's movement is not strong and the occasions launched many operations. On-demand routing protocols are just on the contrary. So proactive routing protocols and on-demand routing protocols have their own advantages, but also have their own disadvantages; the routing protocols using geographic information require the support of hardware conditions; hybrid routing protocols haven't the restriction of hardware conditions, combine the advantage of proactive protocols and on-demand protocols, but avoid the disadvantage of both. So hybrid routing protocols have better performance, ZRP Routing Protocol is one of typical representative of hybrid routing protocols.ZRP routing protocol makes hybrid use of proactive routing protocol and on-demand routing protocol, and makes them worked in different scope, which gives full play to their advantages. In the zone of ZRP adopts proactive routing protocol, which has no the initial delay problem of on-demand routing protocol; in the inter-zone of ZRP adopts on-demand routing protocol, which avoids the interaction overhead problem of proactive routing protocol.Although ZRP routing protocol combines the advantages of proactive routing protocol and on-demand routing protocol, and avoids the disadvantage of both, but there still are some disadvantage, such as: the domain formation algorithm of ZRP is too simple, one node maybe belongs to many domains, one domain maybe belongs to another domain, which exist the routing redundancy situation in the routing forward. For the above shortcomings, in this paper we present an improved protocol to improve the ZRP routing protocol referred to as IZRP. In IZRP we use of new domain generation algorithm, by introducing the concept of the number of communications nodes, we choose the more number of nodes as the central node to generate the domain, which reduced the number of domains avoided nodes' and the domains' duplicate attribution; in domain generation algorithm we choose the central nodes as the cluster header nodes, by using the improved routing algorithm, the cluster header nodes are responsible for routing forward. By this way, redundancy of routing forward is avoided, routing overhead is reduced and the routing efficiency is also improved. In accordance with the routing performance evaluation criteria, through OPNET simulation platform, we carry out the simulation on improved ZRP routing protocol and ZRP routing protocol respectively. By comparing the performance of packet delivery rate, end-to-end average packet delay, routing overhead and so on, we could verify the superiority of improved ZRP.
