Temporal bone is located at the both sides of skull, and it constitutes the lateral wall and proximal wall of middle and posterior cranial fossa. With the characteristics of small volume, irregular shape, subtle structures and adjacent to a group of important structures, temporal bone is the most complicated structure in the body. Moreover, labyrinth, some important blood vessels and nerves were embedded in temporal bone, therefore our research has been focused on temporal bone in the area of otomicrosurgery. The traditional knowledge of temporal bone could only be learned from some text and pictures, but it is difficult for the otological beginner to form three dimensional(3-D) image.Since 1970s, celloidin sections of temporal bone have been used to develop 3-D reconstruction. In recent years, with the development of imageology and computer technology, the 3-D image of temporal bone has made a great progress. In addition, the dataset of digitized Virtual Chinese Human Male No.1 (VCH-M1) and Female No.1(VCH-F1) have been established, and the 3-D model based on VCH-M1 and VCH-F1 has been reconstructed. Each method of 3-D reconstruction has its advantage and disadvantage, and the appropriate one should be selected depending on our scientific research and clinical work. However, all the 3-D images talked above had been reconstructed from 2-D images, and some details were lost during the process of reconstruction. Therefore, the 3-D images is far different from the authenticity and direct-viewing of the anatomical or surgical situation. The theory of stereopsis shows that we could get 3-D images because we look at objects with our both eyes.It is the horizontal distance between two eyes that lead to the formation of different images in the retinae of both eyes. The depth percept is created by the integration of the two different views. As we all know that there were two image-collecting channels in the operating microscope, two digital cameras are mounted on the microscope to record still colour images during the process of otological surgery. Then,we integrated a pair of images into stereo image. With stereoscope and stereo images,we got a real stereo vision of the surface of the surgery field. After analyzing and intergrating these stereo images in the past 3 years,we have finished the stereo surgical atlas of the common diseases of otology. These stereo images could provide more detailed and real information than 2-D ones, and the stereo surgical atlas will be a powerful tool to the surgical teaching and training.
