Virtualization technology is an emerging technology and the research of management and control of resources in the virtualization field is still under development. The existing methods can not carry out the allocation of resources and management effectively. At the same time the majority of current virtual machine monitoring systems can not collect comprehensive information, or accurately calculate consumption of resources, and it also brings great inconvenience into the effective management of resourcesTo address above issues, a resource monitoring system for Xen virtual machine called Xmonitor is proposed to put forward an information collection frame integrated with information collection mechanism in Xen, and it has realized comprehensive and efficient information monitoring for virtual machine, which can help administrators analyzing performance bottleneck of the system. Xmonitor provides a number of resource control interfaces which offer help for effective management of the system resources, and it also provides various ways for resources adjustment, including virtual computing resources adjustment and memory adjustment while the former can be divided into coarse-grained computing resources adjustment, fine-grained computing resources adjustment and mapping relationship adjustment three parts. Coarse-grained computing resources adjustment is suitable for calculation-intensive applications while fine-grained resource adjustment is suitable for non-calculation-intensive applications, and mapping relationship adjustment can achieve physical resources partitioning to improve performance isolations between applications of each virtual machine. Memory adjustment can increase or decrease virtual machine memory dynamically to save resources. Administrators can examine the status of resource consumption through the information monitoring function provided by Xmonitor, and then choose a suitable way of resources adjustment according to application needs, to achieve the objective of improving resource utilization.Compared with virtual machine monitoring system Virt-Manager, Xmonitor is more efficient in monitoring the status of virtual machine. Functional test demonstrates that, administer can manage and allocate processor resources effectively by monitoring the performance metrics of virtual machines. Performance test shows that, the CPU utilization of Xmonitor is lower than Virt-Manager about 20%.
