With the development of computer animation technology, people require animation with higher and higher quality. According to the limitation of current computer hardware technique, it is very time consuming for offline rendering high quality animation, especially for indirect lighting scene. We propose an efficient animation rendering method which employs spatio-temporal coherence on animation rendering architecture. Firstly, we analyze the necessity of using spatio-temporal coherence in animation rendering and give the method of how to use spatio-temporal coherence for high efficiency rendering. Secondly, we design efficient animation rendering architecture in two ways. One the one hand, using sharing method and RS memory structure to manage memory space; on the other hand, using maximizing space region, subdividing and replacing methods to dynamic update KD tree for reducing time of ray traversal and memory consuming. Through experiments, we discuss suitable RSs according to different scenes which mostly utilize animation rendering architecture. Thirdly, we implement how to deal with path visibility change in animation scene, how to use path visibility change test method based on path spatial coherence to development path spatio-temporal coherence, and how to use path spatio-temporal coherence in effective animation rendering architecture to development effective animation rendering method based on path spatio-temporal coherence in order to produce more complete path in the same time and produce high quality image. Finally, we present the advantage of our approach in two aspects. No-reference image quality evaluation demonstrates our approach can effectively remove temporal noise in animation. Moreover, comparison between frames indicates our approach can produce animation with higher quality, especially in indirect scenes.
