Activity multi-instance pattern is an important workflow pattern. Defining multi-instance activity can simplify the definition of workflow dramatically. Multi-instance activity can express the scenario, in which many people conduct the same task. Supporting multiple instances of one activity can enable workflow management system to be flexible on handling workflow process. But some problems emerge, such as synchronizing schedule of multi-instance and conflict of data share.The thesis introduces the concepts of workflow technology, the classification of workflow activity, its executive track, and the differences between activity multi-instance pattern and traditional workflow pattern. The attributes of activity multi-instance is defined flexible. The basic status and its transforming relationship of process instance and activity instance are analyzed, when workflow engine is running. The thesis addresses the design of group-categorization scheduling algorithm and pointer strategy, and the design of workflow management system for Office Automation-Workflow Management System(OA-WfMS) is addressed as well. It focuses on the analysis, design, and implementation of workflow process defining tool and engine.The group-categorization scheduling algorithm solves the synchronization among multi-instance in one activity, when workflow is executed. It starts activity multi-instance with groups, which is synchronized by categorization in one group, so that there is no need to extend the standard workflow model. Furthermore, it has the capability of workflow language expression. Pointer strategy solves the conflict, when activity multi-instance access same data. According to the unique of process instances AID, it can share read-only data and can copy writing data without extra data attributes. It is suitable for standard workflow model.The thesis analyzes the requirement of workflow in OA system, and applied the algorithm and the strategy mentioned above to the design of OA-WfMS, which supports activity multi-instance. An application employs the OA-WfMS for its OA, and achieves successful. It shows the feasibility of activity multi-instance based on the"group-categorization"schedule and"point"strategy.
