The disk laser is an important direction of high-power solid-state laser. The direction of heat flow is parallel to the laser cavity axis; it's very easy to get high-power and good beam quality laser output. The disk laser has two pumping ways: end pumped and side pumped. Compare to end-pumped, side-pumped pumped has simplify the structure, its the area can be expanded without increasing heat load .The paper presents a new structure that is diode side-pumped composite thin disk laser.This paper summarized the technology progresses of different type thin disk laser, analyzed and commented advantages, restrictions, potential development and application of thin disk laser, presented the development trends of thin disk laser.A mathematic model of the pump power absorption in the LD edge-pumped disk laser medium is built. The influence of the quantity of the LD,absorption coefficient of the medium and the distance between the laser diode and the medium are analog calculated.The thermal effects of LDA side-pumped composite crystal is studied with heat exchange equation. The temperature, thermal stress and thermal focus length are obtained. The thermal effects of the crystal are simulated with different thickness of the crystal and different cooling condition of the lasers. Temperature, thermal stress and thermal focus length are comparative analyzed under the same conditions between the composite crystal and the non-composite crystal. Calculation and simulation shows: the temperature and the thermal stress of the composite crystal decrease about 25%, the thermal focus length is increased to two times compare to the non-composite crystal under the same conditions.We use micro channel cooling for diode laser and jet cooling for thin disk crystal. Pumping structure and resonator cavity are designed. Study on the Composite crystal, developed a Composite thin-disk crystal structure, access to a thin-disk Composite crystal's parameters and Technology. System structure of thin disk laser is designed. Experimental measurement the impact of cooling water temperature and gain medium doping, and 40 W of output power was obtained.
