Reverse engineering is a new subject coming up with the development of computer science and the technology of data measurement. At present, it has been widely used in computer aided design & manufacture, biology & medical engineering, film industry with animation, virtual manufacturing & education, non-destructive detect, and so on.This paper begins with some basic concepts about reverse engineering. It includes reverse engineering's research interests, applications, etc. It has two important parts which are called the digitization of model and surface reconstruction .This paper mainly studies these two issues.There is an important step which is called data preprocessing. It is the first step of surface reconstruction. So data smooth dealing and the simplifying are researched in the second chapter. Interpolation and fitting methods are compared, and concludes the best one fitting for this subject.Another important content in reverse engineering is surface reconstruction. It mainly researches the algorithm of multi-level partition of unity in the forth chapter section. It is also called the algorithm of MPU. In this section it has raised two algorithms. One algorithm is the computation of normal vector, another is adjusting normal vector which is based typical point. At last, two methods which are interpolation and approximation are applied to accomplish the surface reconstruction.The software system is introduced at the end of this paper, which is composed by VC++. It is called surface reconstruction system. It is proved reasonable by experiments.
