With the development of value-added service, people will no longer be satisfied with the data-only service or voice-only service.Multimedia service will be a tendency of evolution. The schedule of the 3rd Generation Mobile communication (3G) in China is not only the hotspot of telecom field, but also one of the most popular topics in people's daily life. As one of the international organizations who are engaged in the standardization jobs and offer implementary standards and research reports worldwide, 3GPP has released 4 standards: R99,R4,R5,R6.Among those standards, R4 standard is matured in both theory and practice, so how to build a platform providing multimedia services in 3G-R4 network is what we should be concerned about in the evolution from 2G to 3G.In 2G network, one of the way to provide value-added service is service node.In the future 3G-R4 network, a multimedia service platform can be build up through the rebuilding of the service node in 2G network. This thesis makes a design and implementation of the service node on the background of the future 3G-R4 network. The article is organized as follows:the first chapter introduces the concept, feature and network architecture of 3G, then an introduction of the service node in 2G as well as the CRBT service based on the service node are given, and after that, the definition of multimedia service and its solutions in 3G-R4 network are proposed; The second chapter introduces relational protocols in 3G-R4 network, including BICC(Bearer Independent Call Control), H.248, RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol), IuUP (Iu Interface User Plane) protocol and 3G-324M protocols; In the third chapter, the design goals of the service node are presented at first then the following general design applies layered architecture, service node is divided into 2 layers :call control layer and bearer layer according to the layered architecture.the service node is also separated into Control Node(CN) and Resource Node(RN) as the physical entities, finally the preliminary design for the software structure is made in which the service node is separated into 7 subsystem: Service Presentation and Analysis Subsystem(SPAS),BICC Call Process Control Subsystem(BCPCS), BICC Information Analysis Subsystem(BIAS),Resource Control Subsystem, Resource Process Subsystem(RCS), Bearer layer Protocol Adapter Subsystem(BPAS), Operation and Management Subsystem(OMS); The fourth chapter addressed the design and implemenation of the service node in detail, including the implementation of the 7 subsystems; In the last chapter, there is a summarization of progress and a list of the follow-up work.
