Medical document retrieval course has been offered at medical colleges or universities for more than 20 years. It is of great use in cultivating medical students' abilities to retrieve documents. This paper looks back on the development of medical document retrieval course, analyses the current difficulties in teaching content, teaching methods, the position of the course and the significance of this study. Based on these difficulties, it provides measures of teaching reform for medical document retrieval course. In terms of content reform, it brings forward the idea of adding such content as medical information source, information evaluation, information analysis. As for the method reform, it provides new methods, for example, problem-based learning, replacing traditional examination with performance assessment. As to teaching model reform, it maintains that medical document retrieval course should combine with students' professional courses. With regard to means of instruction, it puts forward a concept- network instruction and bilingual teaching. Meanwhile, it provides external ways in which the medical document retrieval course can be supported, including formulating standards concerning college students' information literacy, and adding information literacy test to Qualification Examination for Medical Practitioner.This paper takes college undergraduates as teaching objects. Its innovation lies in bringing forward the ideas of adding medical information source, information evaluation and information analysis and application to teaching content.Under current higher education system, it is not feasible to provide medical students with a comprehensive medical information literacy education. Medical document retrieval course will still be of great importance for medical students to cultivate their information literacy. On the one hand, we should deepen teaching reform of medical document retrieval course and improve teaching results; On the other hand, the condition of medical document retrieval course should be raised by promoting the development of information literacy education of medical students.
