The paper deals with the diode pumped solid-state laser, analyzing thermal lens in the medium by theoretical and experimental methods. The following conclusions are obtained. The thermal effects are the combined effects of the temperature- and stress-dependent variation of the refractive index and the distortion of the end-face curvature of the rod, among which the effect of the temperature gradient amounts to more than 80 percents of the whole effects. In the diode end-pumped solid-state laser the size of the crystal does not affect the temperature gradient and stress variation except the distortion of the end-face, which increases with the raise of the diameter of the rod. Based on the experiment, the concept of effective thermal lens has been prompted to amend the model of thermal lens, which points out that besides the thermal effects in the medium thermal lenses are also concerned with the mode volume and working-state of the cavity. The technology of the bond-joint crystal has been tentatively analyzed to find a practical way to solve the problem of the heat dispersing in the end-face of the rod and to protect the film on the end-face of the rod.
