"We must help the young people to learn to survive in today's world, which is full of images, texts and sounds." It was a statement by UNESCO in 1982.Media literacy is just one of the key qualities a modern citizen should have in order to survive in this information-exploded era. Media literacy is an attempt to expand the traditional view of literacy, not to replace it. Listening, speaking, reading and writing is vitally important. However, exposed to great quantity of media messages every minute, we need to acquire the ability to choose, to understand, to question, to evaluate the media messages. In essence, a media literate person can think critically about what they see, hear and read in books, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, movies, music, advertising, video games, the Internet, and new emerging technology, and he also has the ability to create and produce messages using print, audio, video, and multimedia. Therefore, people actively make use of the media, not be restricted by the media.Chapter One of this thesis paper defines the meaning of media literacy, expounds on the theory basis of media literacy in the field of mass communication, pedagogy and psychology, and points out the significance of media literacy in information society. Chapter Two and Chapter Three run a comparative study on media literacy between western countries and China. Focusing on the theory development and teaching practice of media literacy in U.K., Australia and Canada, the author tries to conclude some practical inspirations for the education of media literacy in China.
