With the continuing emergence of new services, users have increasingly higher demand on the access network bandwidth. Next-generation passive optical networks (PON) can break the bandwidth bottlenecks of access network, and has become one of important research subjects in the field of optical access network. This thesis focused on novel next-generation passive optical networks with bandwidth higher than lOGbit/s, e.g.40Gbit/s passive optical networks, and proposed the architecture of hybrid polarization-multiplexed and time-division-multiplexed next-generation passive optical network, the main contents can be outlined as follows:1. Introduced background knowledge, and analyzed the development status of passive optical networks;2. Investigated the key technologies to realize next-generation passive optical networks, in terms of optical transmitters, optical amplifiers, optical receivers, wavelength-division-multiplexed filters/routers and passive optical distribution networks, respectively;3. Investigated existing schemes to realize next-generation passive optical networks from areas of time-division-multiplexed passive optical networks and wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks, respectively, and analyzed their corresponding advantages and disadvantages;4. Proposed a novel scheme to realize next-generation passive optical network: hybrid polarization-multiplexed and time-division-multiplexed next-generation passive optical network, and, by comparison with time-division-multiplexed passive optical network, verified its feasibility and superiority through theoretical research, simulation analysis and experimental demonstration.
