By studying the composition corpus of HSK, this thesis collects and analyzes the cases of Chinese characters which look quite similar and thus is mistaken by international students when they took HSK test. Such cases are classified into four groups according to their frequency: above 100 times, 51-100 times, 11-50 times and 10 and below 10 times. According to the number of other characters which are mistaken for one character, the cases can be classified into three types: one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-one. According to the character structure, the cases can also be classified into three types: the single-element Chinese character-to-single-element character, the compound-to-compound and the single-to-compound. After analyzing these cases, this thesis sums up two reasons for those similar and easily mistaken characters: strokes and elements. In terms of strokes, the thesis specifically discusses how the number and difference of forms of strokes have led to the mistaking of similar characters. In terms of elements, the thesis makes a specific classification of causes of the compound characters with similarity, according to the adding and removing of elements, the similarity of elements and the difference between non-radicals and radicals. In the last part, the thesis makes some proposals for TCSL, based on the above cases and analyses, which are to focus on teaching progress, sum up the function of elements, compare the similar elements and practice interest-raising teaching.
