On Gong Xian 's Personality And His Painting Language

Artists’ style of works is affected by many factors. The artist’s personality trait is the important factor influencing his or her art works. Personality not only affects the individual’s way of thinking and life style but also influences and determines the style of behavior and demeanor in a unique way. It is necessary to have an intensive study on the artists’ personalities to get a real understanding of their works. This article systematically analyzes Gong Xian’s artistic personality including the reasons of formation of artistic personality and its influence on his painting language.Therefore, by studying Gong Xian’s artistic personality, I can have an accurate understanding of Gong Xian and his paintings and increase my interest on learning them.In this paper, I analyze and study Gong Xian’s artistic personality and painting language in a systematic way. The first part focuses on the relation between pursuit of personality and the landscape painting. The second part states Gong Xian’s personality characteristic and factors on it.The third part expounds Gong Xian’s pen and ink language. The fourth part focuses on Gong Xian’s personality, landscape painting and influence on art education and generations.Gong Xian continuously explored and innovated the style of painting. His style of painting had undergone a changing process from simplicity to complexity. In his former period, he emphasized the use of lines, but the latter he stressed the use of pen and ink which demonstrating a unique painting style.Gong Xian brought up the “Four Musts” as the guideline for painting. He learned the traditional painting, meanwhile, he advocated that painter should innovate on the basis of inheritance and imitate the nature. This article systematically analyzes Gong Xian’s artistic personality characteristics, characteristic attribution and its influence on his art style. The purpose is to help people better understand Gong Xian’s art works and art style through the research of Gong Xian’s artistic personality.
