| Among the China directors, Peter Chan does not enjoy the best credentials,nor is he the representative of low budget independent films, yet he can be called as the new genius director. Switching his identities from a Hongkong director to an Asian filmmaker to a Chinese one, he became well versed in the flexible ways of life, while blending the feelings of art and commerce values seamlessly. This ensures the artistic pursuit of the individual, and secures high box office value. From this perspective, one has to admit that Peter Chan is one of the top Chinese film directors in recent years.This paper provides a comprehensive review of Peter Chan’s filming course and his two major creation phases, and illustrates the realistic topic he implied in the film text, reflecting his realistic attitude, emotional standpoint, skepticis m and pessimism. In addition, through the concrete examples, the paper summa rizes Chan’s innovation in narration, namely the narrative point of view, the uni que type of hybridity and structure of subversion and reconstruction. Finally, in the macroscopic view of cultural context, it concludes that Chan’s works reflect the features of popular culture and elite culture characteristics, especially Peter Chan’s self awareness of elite pursuit, whose enlightenment function cannot be i gnored in the development of Chinese film industry. |
