The expert system for botanical pesticide which was developed by Biorational Pesticide Research and Development Center in Northwest Sci-Tech University of Agriculture and Forestry collected many years of achievements in scientific research. The research and development of botanical pesticide which included active plant, active substance, botanical pesticide performance and the activity of the plant and substance was studied with the mothed of database design methodology, and an essential information expert consulting ststem for botanical pesticide was established with the active plant-based. This system was designed by Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft Access 2004.It can perform the expert action and concide to the need of the research and development of botanical pesticide. The system possessed six modules: query system, system management ,experimental approach,statistical analysis,picture management and help. Each module was interdependent and isolated operation. Query system was the kernel part of the system, which was composed of active plant, active substance, the activity and botanical pesticide, and provided the essential information of botanical pesticide.Experimental approach,statistical analysis and picture management was the auxiliary module, experimental approach module provided the main method of bioassay and toxicology which can supply the theoretical principle for the research; statistical analysis module that can save much of time for the user generalized the normal method of statistical analysis on test result; picture management offered many pictures on efficacy trials of pesticide and specimen plants which provided reference data for the further research; system management and help module that introducted the basic composition,use method,system maintenance and the increase and decrease of the datas was the supplementary module of the system. The system collected about 2,400 kinds of active plants, 106 botanical pesticides, 500 active substances, their activity and correspondent reference. In addition, the system also provided normal methods of bioassay and toxicology in the research and 1,161 pictures on efficacy trials of pesticide. Because kinds of computer technologies (multimedia et al) were used, this system would be provided with a friendlier man-computer interface, a stronger capability, easier operation and quicker query; its knowledge base could also be modified and enlarged. Result in this study showed that it was feasible completely to constructing the expert system for botanical pesticide with rule-based reasoning and case-based reasoning technology. In the future the key of the study will be focus on how to improve the low identified rate and how to make the system more easy to be used.
