The all-optical wavelength converter (AOWC) is a key technology in WDM networks. Among many schemes to implement the AOWC, Four-wave Mixing (FWM) based on DFB-LD shows its potential application because of high conversion bandwidth, compact configuration as well as strict transparency. So it becomes the excellent selection for ideal optical converter.Keep to the point, several work has been carried out as follows:In the introduction, the background, purpose and effects on the network of AOWC have been discussed. FWM based on DFB-LD to realize AOWC is available and advantageous by comparing with other schemes. In chapter two, the principle of FWM and DFB-LD's coupled-wave theory are introduced firstly. Then a model of carrier density matrix equations is built, three effects such as carrier density pulsation(CDP), carrier heating(CH), spectral hole burning(SHB) are analyzed. Finally we can find how three effects work on the power of conjugate wave.Chapter three is the emphasis of this dissertation, the theory model of highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing(HNFWM) based on DFB-LD has been pointed out. The thesis starts from coupled-wave equations combining the special structure of DFB-LD, then we get the transmission gain, reflection gain of probe and conjugate waves at the range of 4THz by way of numerical calculation. We also discuss some factors which work on these gains. To get higher gains, we should select appropriate factors including normalized coupling strength, pump level and the length of laser.Chapter four is about experiment, the power supply's circuit of DFB-LD is illustrated, especially its many safeguards for semiconductor lasers. We have measured two DFB lasers' spectra at different currents. Further work will be completed later.
