Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a new equipment to avoiding ship collision. Through VHF transceiver, it can automatically transmit dynamic or static messages collected by ship sensors and placed manually. At the same time, it can receive the messages transmitted from other ships to gain the ends of tracking. Compared with Radar, it is a revolution in tracking technique. It can avoid collision used in ship and also can help the traffic management in VTS.This paper concentrates on the application of AIS in VTS. After analyzing the relation between AIS and other sub-systems of VTS, we conclude that AIS can be regarded as a sub-system of VTS. AIS can work harmoniously with other sub-systems and improve the functions of VTS by doing this. The paper mainly discusses the effects of AIS in VTS. It implements the functions by transmitting AIS messages and puts forward the calculating model of message capacity. This paper mostly refers to the following functions,1. Receiving and transmitting of messages and data2.Watching and controlling ships3.Management to the working mode of ships4.Providing traffic managementCombing with the established protocols, this paper puts forward the message format adapted to AIS, and calculates the amount of frame and message capacity required. By comparison, we can see that the functions and efficiency of VTS have been enhanced after importing AIS.This paper also realizes the module simulation of AIS messages ransmitted from VTS information system.
