The RF discharge technology has been developed for laser pump in recent years. The RF discharge excited waveguide CO2 laser has been the suitable light source of lidar, because of its low volume, high efficiency and the particular wavelength. To get higher volumetric efficiency, the folded cavity has been applied in this type of laser. In this paper, a compact design of RF discharge excited waveguide CO2 laser is presented, which is used as the master oscillator in the lidar. This design has combined a Degnan and Hall Case III coupling configuration and U-folded cavity, that is, the mirror-waveguide space is folded and there is only one ceramic waveguide in the whole cavity. The losses analysis indicates this type of U-folded cavity is a good one. The ceramic waveguide is 320mm long and its section has a 2.5mm square bore. The fundamental mode beam has been gotten. The power output of U-folded laser without catalyzer, 3.5W has been gotten, while the corresponding unfolded laser, 4.5 W. This result indicates the availability of the forementioned design. And the length of the laser is well shortened with the fold structure. The experimental results of power output as a function of the concave mirror transmission and the mirror-waveguide distance basically agree with the corresponding theory. Also, a new type of prism is designed as folding mirror substituting for the plane mirror, in order to enhance the reflectivity. In addition, an experiment method for grating obliquity adjusting is discussed in this paper.
