Inquiry-Based Learning has emerged as a significant approach in the development of the language curriculum for recent years.It is a kind of teaching model mainly inquired by the learner.It is a classroom activity that guide the students to use methods like observation,discovery,induction and practice,study the knowledge of language and feel the language function,develop the students' practice ability and the innovation thought.Students must be trained for the creative individual character.However,in the actual language teaching,teachers,in most cases,still use traditional teaching methods in order to complete tasks.They put more emphasis on teaching materials and teaching methods than on learning methods.Classes should be learner-centered,with meaningful,functional activities.Teachers must train them to be ready and free to question doubts about their study,and develop their wide thought and rich imagination.In English teaching,reading not only is the main input content,but also is the main input channel. Reading ability is one of the basic skills in English utilization.But it is not easy to form the reading ability.At present,in China,inquiry-based learning was used in enhancing the language aspect,but few researches have been done to improve students' reading comprehension.And how to improve junior high school students' reading comprehension remains unexplored.This paper is based on socio-constructivist theory and psycholinguistic perspective.In view of the low English reading ability of junior high school student,this paper tries to answer these two questions:1.Can inquiry-based learning be better than traditional teaching in improving junior high school students' reading comprehension?2.How to implement Inquiry-Based Learning in Junior High ESL Classrooms?The investigation data have revealed that inquiry-based learning is superior to traditional teaching approach in improving the reading comprehension of junior high school students.Inquiry-Based Learning changes the instilling teaching in the teaching of reading.It helps students form good learning strategies,enhances students' interest in learning English and reading ability.It not only trains the innovative spirit of the students and hands-on experience,but also improve the quality of teaching.
