A Comparative Analysis Of Leech's Grand Strategy Of Politeness In Public Speaking At University By Chinese And Americans' State Leaders

This thesis strives to conduct a comparative study on Leech's Grand Strategy of Politeness(GSP) by Chinese and American state leaders' public speaking at university, attempting to find out the linguistic realization of politeness strategies.Based on Leech' s GSP framework,the paper analyzes seven public speaking which are collected from the official website delivered by state leaders from Chinese and American at university.This is an initiative effort of applying the GSP theory to the field of public speaking.In order to investigate the strategies what state leaders choose to express their communicative purposes,and uncover linguistic realization of politeness strategies.After analysis,the research results show that the 10 pragmatic constraints of GSP are realized in public speaking at university incompletely,and the pos-positive is employed more weight than neg-politeness.The result also shows that GSP does not deny the dimensions of cross-cultural or linguistics variation,it offers a reference framework to manifest that politeness does not have the absolute universality,but there is also no absolute divide between East and West in politeness.In spite of the contribution,this study has some limitations,a small number in the corpus make the result impossible to represent thoroughly,which can offer some implication to related research field.All the conclusions and implications in the present study await the other scholars' test with more scientific research methods.
