English writing, as a kind of written communication form, has become more and more important in our country with the expansion of international exchange. But English writing is usually considered the most difficult part of the four language skills both in middle school English writing and in college English writing. So a lot of articles about English writing errors, about how to improve writing skills, about teaching methods of English writing, spring up. From these papers, it is not difficult to find that most of the papers point out clearly that English writing level can reflect a student's overall English proficiency or that English writing level reflects a learner's integrative competence of using language. So this paper intends to study the relationship between English writing level and the overall English proficiency based on authentic data. On the one hand, it is to confirm whether English writing level can reflect a student's overall English proficiency; on the other hand, according to the research results, we can seek the most efficient ways to try to improve English writing level. This research takes parts of marks of a CET4 exam from Shaanxi Normal University. In order to facilitate statistic analysis and to avoid the negative influence brought by the arts and science difference, the author choose College of Politics and Economics, Chinese Language & Literature College, History & Culture College as the representative of school of arts, and choose College of Mathematics and Information Science, College of Physics & Information Technology, School of Chemistry & Material Science, School of Computer Science as the representative of school of science. We choose 150 students from schools of arts and 150 students from schools of science, and take the 300 students'marks as the research objects. This research makes use of SPSS 17.0 and EXCELL to conduct statistic analysis of 300 students'marks, adopting both a qualitative and quantitative research methods. We first use the qualitative method to test the normality of CET4 Writing Marks (CET4WM) and CET4 Total Scores (CET4TS). Then, we create the scatterplot graph of the two variables. The first two procedures provide ways for the correlation study. In the correlation analysis, the statistical result indicates that there exists a significantly positive correlation between CET4 Writing Marks and CET4 Total Scores. Based on the analysis result, we have worked out the regression equation. In a summary, we have confirmed the relationship between CET4 Writing Marks and CET4 Total Scores from a quantitative analysis. Then, we use the qualitative method to analyze the relationship between them. The statistical results are as follows:one. from the normality test, CET4 Writing Marks is close to normal distribution, and CET4Total Scores is normal distribution:two. from the scatterplot graph, there exists a linear relationship between the two variables; three, from the Pearson correlation analysis, the correlation is significantly positive; four, based on the linear regression line, the regression equation is created. At the end of the paper, some advisable implications are put forward for English teachers to improve students' English writing level, and at the same time to improve students'overall English proficiency.
