An Evaluation On New Standard College English---an Integrated Course From Learners' Perspective

New Standard College English are published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press in Mar.2009, at present, which are the newest college English course book in the market. They have been adopted by a couple of colleges and universities in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regions, which are in the trial stage. The thesis attempts to analyze and evaluate in-use New Standard College English from learners'perspective---one of the main users under the effective working model, by which we could investigate their beliefs as to the New Standard College English. On the other hand, through the analysis and evaluation, we could know the concerned problems caused by the course book during the students'studying, and the strengths and weaknesses of the series of New Standard College English respectively, which the author gives the teachers, colleges and the compilers of the course book and some related management departments some suggestions.The author reviews some major relevant research theories and results for the material evaluation at home and abroad. According to them, the author sets up a working model for the evaluation which is included two processes, preliminary evaluation (the analysis of the material as it is) and in-use evaluation (taking students' views into consideration). In the preliminary evaluation, the author analyzes the course book from the aspects of the background, conceptions, claims and principles of the compiling, its package and other items analysis of language knowledge and language skills, topic design etc. In the second one, an in-use evaluation is conducted from learners' perspective by administering questionnaire to fresher students of ten different majors at Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, by which the data are collected and analyzed based on the statistic software of SPSS 17.0.Based on the evaluation, the series of New Standard College English aim to construct a learner-centered teaching model and lay a solid foundation in English for the students and develop their abilities to use the language. To some extent, it is justified that the series generally are helpful to culture students'integrated English language skills and develop their capabilities comprehensively with its large amount of input. However, the series of New Standard College English are a bit far from perfect, which are needed to be taken into consideration in material adaptation, such as, difficult degree of the text varies largely; exercises design is stereotypical; pay inadequately attention to the strategies-learning; listening material is too fast; spoken material is not be fully used at class; lack of guidance in writing skills; the class hour is so limited that a lot of content can not be completed.
