ObjectiveTo observe the effectiveness of Huo Xue Bu Shen method in treating cervical spondylosis of vertebral artery type (CSA).MethodsTotally 44 patients with CSA (Shen Xu Xue Yu type) were randomly divided into two groups (testing group n=24, control group n=20) from February 2007 to January 2008. Bu Shen Huo Xue prescription, one dose per day for two weeks as a period of treatment, was given to 24 patients in testing group and Jing Shu granule was given to 20 patients in control group, two bags per day and lasting for two weeks as a period of treatment. The scores of clinical symptoms and signs, vertigo were recorded before and after treatment. Both in testing group and control group, pain scales before and after treatment were measured by using visual analogue scale (VAS). And detecting contents of trans cranial doppler (TCD), heart rate variability and blood rheology were obtained before clinical test and after two weeks of treatment. The records were analyzed statistically with SPSS 13.0 software.Results1 Huo Xue Bu Shen method in treating CSA (Shen Xu Xue Yu type) gains fairly marked therapeutic effect and the total effective rate is 91.67%.2 Accumulated points of symptoms and signs were improved evidently in both testing group and control group. Testing group gained a better score of improvement than that of control group (P<0.05). 3 Vertigo both in testing group and in control group after treatment was significantly improved (P<0.01). The relief of vertigo in testing group was more significant than that in control group (P<0.05).4 Vertigo of patients with CSA was correlated with the content of velocity mean (Vm) and sympathetic nerve (SN) in vertigo evaluation (P<0.01).ConclusionThis clinical study shows an obvious effect of Huo Xue Bu Shen method in treating CSA. The vertigo evaluation reveals that Huo Xue Bu Shen method is an idea means of treatment in reducing vertigo. HRV was one of the important index of CSA both in diagnosis and effect evaluation.
