A Study On Longgang Town Of Yangxin County In Hubei

This case study is on Longgang Town in Yangxin county, one sub-topic of "The Study on Traditional Residence in Hubei Province" and one part of "The Study on Conversation and Utilization's Mode and Method of Ancient Town in Hubei Province" founded by Wuhan University of Technology. It is also one part of "China-Japan's Cooperative Study on the Streets of Ancient Town in Hubei Province" cooperated with Japan. We especially focus on Longgang town, explore its distinct value about history, culture, politics, economy through streets and architecture, analyze its town, streets and architecture characters. Furthermore, we provide some ideas on protecting and utilizing this invaluable resource to recover the energy of the ancient town.The paper is composed of seven chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction. From Chapter 2 to Chapter 6 is the main body of the paper, which depicts Longgang's development and evolvement, analyzes town space configuration, streets space, architecture types and architecture characters. Chapter 7 is the part of the summary.The first chapter is the introduction which contains the purpose, meaning, object, content, method of the study as well as the present condition of the ancient town conservation.The second chapter depicts the development and evolvement of Longgang. There were plenty of surplus farm products because of its predominant natural environment. With the development of traditional handicraft industry, some farm products were processed into export, and its ascendant waterway accelerated the development of agricultural economy.The third chapter researches the natural environment, water system, landform, traffic of Longgang. Combining the present town space structure of Longgang, it analyzes the inevitability of its habitation, speculate on the process of town space configuration evolvement, conclude the arrangement of streets abut on the river which heavily influence the commercial development of the ancient town.The forth chapter analyzes the layout and space configuration of the streets, probes into the space characters of the streets.The fifth chapter classifies each of the buildings through their function and space position, embodies the architecture characters from roof, elevation and structure.The sixth chapter proposes some principals for the protection and usage of the ancient town. Firstly, it analyzes the conservation problems which we will encounter. Secondly, it proposes the conservation and usage measures.The seventh chapter summarizes our research and gives some hints for the further research on Longgang.Longgang town of Yangxin county has been 600 years old since it came into being. There are plenty of historical culture in the ancient town, and it reserves the valuable historic relics and cultural legacies. Its town, streets, architecture features help us realize the regionality and particularity of ancient town in Hubei, and construct the strong theoretic basis for the further research.
