| Based on the urban renewal practical and theoretical experiences of the city in the past, the urban regeneration theory in Western Europe in the 21st century is guided by an integrated, comprehensive and long-term view, aiming at revitalizing the current urban area, and making it develop sustainably. Every country has different governmental strategic policies and actual status of urban regeneration, but all of them present the idea which considers the city as an organic whole, and which is putting people first, encouraging public participation, improving social exclusion, recovering environment quality, caring urban culture and realizing overall renaissance. This paper starts from the background of the mentioned urban regeneration, studying the developments of the urban renewal theory and practice, as well as the city status in different times which have been closely correspondent with its changes. And then, this paper summarizes the theoretical system of the urban regeneration into three parts (core thoughts, design of the material environment, and implementation of security tactics), elaborates and analyzes them. It also studies the cases involved in the relevant key subjects. At last, it concludes the inspiration from the urban regeneration theory to the renaissance method on the canal ancient town by practical summary of the Shihe district in Tangqi, the ancient town of Grand Canal. Although the urban regeneration theory has been put forward with focusing on the developed city status, it strives for recovering the declined urban center vitality, and absorbing people's life again. Moreover, the viewpoints and action on the aspect of city renewal has significant revelatory meaning to the organic renovation of Hangzhou cities, the theoretical system and practice of the ancient town of Grand Canal. This paper hopes not only to understand and draw the renewal policies from the current developed cities in West Europe, but also to be able to promote the renaissance practice of the domestic canal ancient towns which have special historic backgrounds by analyzing the urban regeneration theory and combining the practice in Tangqi. |
