In recent years, a new technology which is called Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS), which is an effective instrument for modem power system operating safely, reliably and economically has appeared to improve the quality of power network. Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) which is the important part of FACTS becomes the global research focus in virtue of control predominant characteristic and nicer compensation effect. Comparing with the traditional reactive power compensation equipments, STATCOM has the advantages of faster regulation speed and higher control accuracy.The circuit diagram and work principle of STATCOM are introduced in detail in this paper. Two control strategies of STATCOM are discussed which includes direct- current control and indirect-current control. Fuzzy-PI control method of STATCOM is also put forward to improve dynamic performance as well. Combining dynamic characteristics of Fuzzy-Control with respond speed of PI-control, STATCOM system not only has fast response, but also has satisfied control precision. Then methods can be realized easily by digital control. According to Fuzzy-PI control strategies, we model the emulate system architectures by MATLAB software. The regulative quality and dynamic quality of STATCOM are analyzed from the waveforms of some electric variables. With the digital signal processor-DSP, the hardware and software design scheme of STATCOM are determined.
