| As a typical kind of traditional furniture, a bed, in order to meet with the changing demands of modern residents, is going to be combined with the advanced science and technologies inevitably so that it can keep on its evolution with modern times which represents a looming tendency of robotization and informationalization. This is the background of the rising of multifunctional beds.This paper is a study on the design of multifunctional beds both in theory and practice from the views of industrial design. Using methods of dialectics, comparative analysis, analogy, and computer aided industrial design, the paper consists of three steps:first, the establishment of the design conception. Based on studying the concept of a bed, summing up the history of beds, analyzing the market demands of multifunctional furniture industry and estimating the physical basis, the design conception of multifunctional beds comes out which consists primarily in a combination of four ideas:humanized design idea, intellectualization, informationalization and environmental-friendly design idea. The achievement of this design conception lies in the comprehensive applications of modern science and technologies such as mechatronics, digitalization, networking, automation, integration, modularization and so on. Second, the study on the specific theories. Facing with the Chinese market and culture and taking being-bed-bedroom as a whole system, the systematic study of multifunctional bed design includes the study of design psychology and ergonomics. Third, the industrial design practice. The paper gives six design works of multifunctional beds and analyzes the structures, appearances, and materials. Two patents have been applied for and awarded which are the preparation for publicity and manufacturing:patents of appearance ZL200830100055.5 and utility model ZL200920099343.2.This paper gives a reference for furniture designers, sleeping institutions and the furniture industry in China. |
