The Yangtze River Delta is composed by 16 cities located in Shanghai,Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Its integrative strength is the most strongly among China's three urban agglomerations. With its rapid economic development and accelerated progress of urbanization, the contradiction between environment and economy is increasingly prominent and the man-land relationship is gradually taken seriously. In this study, the air pollution inventory specially for the Yangtze River Delta in 2004 by use of emission factor method. In this study, the main pollution sources are divided into industrial and commercial sources, traffic sources and area sources. The industrial and commercial sources include power plants, industrial boilers, hospitals, hotels and etc.The emission factors are calculated by studying the pollution reports and environmental impact assessment reports for the Yangtze River Delta in recent years. The traffic sources include motor vehicle traffic emission and road dust emission and are estimated by the European traffic model COPERTâ…¢.The area sources include living gas emission, straw burning emission and vegetation emission. For civil gas emissions, residential coal gas, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas combustion pollutants are estimated. The gas emission volume is distributed into residential landuse plots.Straw combustion emission is estimated through food production and the volume of straw burning. The emission volume is distributed into plots whose landuse properties are farmland. Through this emission inventory, the SO2 emission for the year is 2.10 million tons, the NOx emission is 2.03 million tons, the CO emission is 2.74 million tons, the particulate matter emission is 2.78 million tons,NMVOC emission is 0.74 million tons and PAH emission is 22 tons.In order to verify the accuracy of this emission inventory, the estimation results of this study is compared with more mature foreign emission inventories, the TRACE-P and REAS emission inventories. After comparison, the Shanghai's air pollution emission inventory is more closely to these two inventories by spatial distribution and emission volumes. What's more, the sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides estimation results are satisfactory while particulate matter and carbon monoxide emissions are smaller than other emission inventories overall. Yangtze River Delta cities in this paper consist of 8 cities in Jiangsu Province,7 cities in Zhejiang Province and Shanghai City. With its rapid economic development and accelerated progress of urbanization, the contradiction between environment and cconomy is increasingly prominent and the man-land relationship is gradually taken into consideration seriously.Air pollutants emission inventory was developed in this study for Yangtze River Delta in 2004 using emission factors. The pollution sources were divided into industrial and commercial sources, traffic sources and area sources.Industrial and commercial sources include power plants, industrial boilers, hospitals, hotels and etc.Emission factors were compiled according to the pollution emission declaration data and some recent environmental impact assessment reports for typical plants in Yangtze River Delta.Emissions from about 3.652 industrial and commercial air pollution sources in Shanghai were evaluated. In the other 15 cities in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, emissions from 253 big industrial sources were assessed individually. The other industrial sources emissions were calculated by subtracting big industrial sources emissions from the pollution emission declaration data. The traffic sources included primary emissions from vehicle exhaust and secondary emissions from road dust.Vehicle exhaust emissions were estimated by the European traffic model COPERTâ…¢.Road dust emissions were estimated by different traffic flow. The area sources like living gas emission, straw burning emission and vegetation emission were taken into account. For civil gas emissions, residential coal gas, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas combustion pollutants were estimated. Straw combustion emissions were estimated through food production and the volume of straw burning.Total emissions were as follows:2.10 million tons SO2,2.01 million tons NOx,2.35 million tons CO,2.74 million tons TSP,and 0.20 million tons NMVOC,and 22 tons PAHs.The estimation results of this study were compared with two regional/global emission inventories, the TRACE-P and REAS emission inventories.According to the comparison, the Shanghai's air pollution emission inventory was consistent with these two inventories in the spatial distribution and emission volumes. In addition,SO2 and NOx estimation results were close to the other two emission inventories overall.
