| With the development of economy and the progress of technology and science, human being achieves a resplendent success and faces the problems of resources, environment, energy and development as well. So how to carry out sustainable development has become emphasis to be researched by scientists all over the world. Especially the index system of sustainable development turns into the key of the investigation,which determines the establishment and implement of strategies and the realization of sustainable development, becomes the key of the problem. As one quantitative way to measure sustainable development, Ecological Footprint becomes popular with its visual definition, ample connotation and easy manipulation.The ecological footprint(EF) model is a new aggregative indicator which proposed to assess the utilization degree of the nature by Wackernagel.M, etc. This method can provide new idea to assess the regional development.This paper introduces the concept of ecological footprint, the calculational method, the calculational model and the research progress on present domestic and foreign, and take the Xinjiang Korla city as an example, calculate the ecological footprint of Korla city from 1966 to 2005. The result shows that, korla's ecological footprint is on ecological deficit condition continuously, and the ecological deficit is going up year after year, this indicates that, Korla city's development is unsustainable. This paper analyses and discusses the reason which forms on the Korla city ecological deficit, and forecasts the ecological footprint in the future five years to Korla city, and proposes policies about how to reduce the ecological deficit, hope to provide the scientific basis and the policy instruction for Korla city. The final part of paper proposes the improved suggestions to some questions which exists in the regional sustainable development appraisal research. |
