Geography has its incomparable advantage in promoting environmental education, since it is a comprehensive subject concerning the research on the geographical conditions in which human being live and the relationship between human being and geographical conditions, almost covering all knowledge about environmental problems. So environmental education has become an essential content in geography teaching, which is also based on the spirit of the elementary education reform and the secondary geographical course reform. In school teaching activities, relying on the geography teaching, the geographical course standard used as an instructive document, through various activities, teachers give the students penetration-like environmental education step by step.Firstly the article recalls the history of environmental education in the world and the situation of the environmental education in the elementary and secondary schools in our country. Secondly the article, basing on the data of the investigation on the environmental education in the middle schools of Fujian, analyses the present conditions of environmental education and the existing problems. Thirdly the article analyses the connection between geography teaching and environmental education, the advancement of the geography theory and the reform of the geography teaching in middle school, exploring the theoretical basis of environmental education in geography teaching. Fourthly the article specifies the goal and task of the environmental education in the middle schools, suggests an idea of environmental education penetration, with the new geography standard in middle schools as an instructive document, in class teaching, comprehensive activities and school construction, etc., and makes an analysis on the content, approach and channel of the penetration. At last the article analyzes the requirement that the geography teachers should meet in the permeative environmental education and offers respective strategy of the operational pattern in the sustainable development of environmental education.
