The main task of conservation biology is protecting biodiversityDeveloping practical approaches to prevent species extinction, and trying toresume the normal function of endangered species in ecosystem is one ofimportant target of biological conservation.Lumnitzera littorea (Jack.) Voigt is an endangered mangrove plant. Fieldinvestigation revealed that there are merely about 359 L.littorea mangrovetrees in China, extremely endangered, locating at Tielu Bay (9 trees), Dadunvillage of Lingshui county (about 340 trees) and Dongzhai Bay (10 trees, transplanted ) in Hainan province.Phenology observation in Tielu Bay showed L.littorea's florescencebagan in March, blossoming from April to June, fruiting from April to August, and about 22.2% L. littorea trees have bi-florescence.L.littorea trees had high abortion rate. The dissection showed abortionrate was plus correlation to tree's age and minus correlation to size of fruit, andno correlation to color of fruit. The seed abortion rate would be more higher ifmiddle pecicarp of fruit had rotten. The experiment in field and laboratory indicated the crab Sesarmadehaani is the main gnawer of L.littorea fruit. The low content of tannin wasthe main cause why Sesarma dehaani would like to gnaw its fruits. Seed propagation, cutting propagation and cutting aerial layeringpropagation all did not reproduct new L. littorea trees. It proved much arduousand complicated to save this endangered plant.Last, suggest to strengthen the protection and research inL.littorea trees.
