Environmental radon and its progenies are commonly consist in air. Over the past few decades, there has been a large scientific interest in the study of environmental radon's dualism. On the one hand, environmental radon is used widely in the field of geology,industry,medicine and other, make the benefit of people; On the other hand, the public dose and the effect to people's health caused by environmental radon and its progenies received more attention around the world. Many countries and regions carried out systematic studies on the radon exhalation rate from soil, considering the soil as the major source of environmental radon. Compared with other countries, the radon exhalation rate from common soils, which is regarded as the root of environmental radon, other than the concentration of gas,indoor concentration and soil concentration have not been well studied in our country, In some high background regions, the radon exhalation from soil and building materials made of soil causes real problems that can not be neglected.This text is based on the project of "Study on radon radiation field and its environmental effect on the gas-ground interface", financed by National Natural Science Foundation of China(No: 40374051) and "Research on the mathematic equation of radon radiation field on the gas-ground interface", financed by the Academic and Technological Foundation of Sichuan province(No: 2200337).In this paper, firstly the basic knowledge on radon property, sources, hazard and protection was introduced in order to clarify the meaning of soil radon exhalation study. Then based on a systematic review of the mechanisms of radon emanation, transportation and exhalation in soil, a mathematical model for calculating radon exhalation rate from soil was established. Afterwards, the principles,instruments and methods of measuring the radon exhalation rate from soil were described in details. Finally, this text explains why we must choose the instrument developed by our college.This practical measurement was carried out in Chengdu University of technology by use of the introduced equipment. Compared the result of model to the average result of experiment, it can demonstrates well the reference of model. Based on the measurement data, we analyzed the change rule of radon exhalation rate under different weather factor, including pressure,humidity,temperature, as well as moisture content. According to the results, a positive correlation between radon exhalation rate and temperature, relative humidity, and a negative correlation between pressure were appeared. All these analysis, can bring people more reference to carry out prevention measure of environmental radon.
