As a regional folk art,Horinger paper-cutting embodies the choice of creation and humanistic concerns of the local community driven by survival needs. It continues the common features of traditional folk paper-cutting in northern China in terms of cultural values, functions and humanistic meanings, and has undergone local changes in structural patterns, shapes, and aesthetic pursuits with the development of the times, thus showing regional style characteristics. This thesis analyzes the emergence of Horinger paper-cutting and its ethnicity from the dual perspectives of ethnography and art.It takes the study of the diachronic and synchronic cultural integration as a clue to analyze the artistry of Horinger paper-cutting.The thesis aims to enriches the traditional and modern connotations of Horinger paper-cutting.Based on the characteristics of folk paper-cutting in northern China, combined with the historical literature on Chinese paper-cutting,the existing research results and field survey data of Horinger, this thesis comprehensively discusses the social environment, agricultural economic model, family production, fixed residence and other objective conditions for the production and survival of Horinger paper-cutting.The images of Horinger paper-cutting are simple, condensed and roughly shaped, gradually forming localized regional humanistic characteristics.Horinger paper-cutting is an art based on the local environment and cultural integration. It continues the cultural characteristics of “Rural China” and is the art of localization after the multi-ethnic groups have adapted to the local environment. Its inheritors are mainly immigrants and their descendants from Shanxi,Shaanxi and Hebei provinces. They have incorporated nomadic cultural elements and themes into their paper cutting.Taking history as the vertical line and the “Helinger paper cutting is defined as intangible cultural heritage ” as the horizontal line, the thesis studies Horinger paper-cutting from the perspective of cultural integration, and analyzes the development model of “traditional” and “modern” in two different contexts.Firstly, the traditional development model is a combination of diachronic farming culture and nomadic culture, relying on the folk masses. It is inseparable from the life of the people and is a "self-contained" model of existence and development. The thesis analyzes its ontological composition, structure, artistic characteristics, aesthetics and cultural connotation.Secondly, the modern development model is to develop, utilize and protect the traditional cultural resources of the region by taking the development and integration of the synchronic traditional folk culture resources and the “intangible cultural heritage” as the foundation. This is a transition from an objective factual phenomenon to an original art system,a conscious and confident model of conservation and development. This thesis illustrates this by analyzing the changes in its transmission methods and platforms, conservation achievements and conservation development model. The thesis explores the formation of Horinger paper-cutting in the phenomenon of cultural integration through the following six sections.Ⅰ.The relationship between Horinger paper-cutting and its natural environment and humanistic background is examined, and the roots of the existence of Horinger paper-cutting are investigated in the context of cultural integration over time. The cultural environment of traditional “Rural China” provides a platform and cultural expression “field” for Horinger paper-cutting.As the time goes on,the protection of the “intangible cultural heritage” gives new meaning to the semantics of“paper-cutting tradition”,“traditional paper-cutting” and “modern paper-cutting” of Horinger paper-cutting.Ⅱ.The traditional state and inheritance of Horinger paper-cutting.This section focuses on the relationship between paper-cutting and daily life, illustrating its functional value and the selection of its themes around real life, starting from the needs and reflecting the "emotional forms" of local people and their expectations for a better life.Because of the difference in the division of labor between men and women in traditional society, the inherited group is mainly women, and is passed on and developed through oral transmission, teaching, imitation and innovation.Ⅲ.The ontological composition and structural patterns of Horinger paper-cutting.By analyzing the practical types, symbolic systems, and structural patterns of Horinger paper-cutting from multiple perspectives, its regional characteristics and artistic expression patterns will be discovered and understood. In the regional changes, the screening and reconstruction of the paper-cutting structure and the integration of the expressive contents make Horinger paper-cutting gradually become an artistic act in harmony with the regional nature and humanities.Ⅳ.The artistic characteristics and aesthetic implication of Horinger paper-cutting.The cultural integration has formed the unique thinking and production of regional groups, and the comparison between Horinger paper-cutting and those in Shanxi and Shaanxi shows the condensed choice of subject matter and the simplicity of the formal structure.People condensed their perceptions and the relationship between everything in the process of survival into “laws of beauty”,such as the concepts of “all”,“full” and “live”,which became the aesthetic criteria of Horinger paper-cutting,and created with this as the standard, deleting the elaborate details and presenting the rustic aesthetic mood of Horinger.Ⅴ.The cultural connotation of Horinger paper-cutting.Horinger paper-cutting reflects the survival needs of the people, reflecting the desire to avoid harm and survive. It regulates the tension between the objective situation and the survival needs of the masses through symbols, metaphors and homonyms, soothing anxiety, tension and even fear.People understand the meaning and value of life in paper-cutting and can realize the pursuit of a better life with an optimistic attitude.Ⅵ.The spatial and temporal transformation of the semantics of Horinger paper-cutting.This section explores its inheritance, protection and development under the condition of the “intangible cultural heritage”,and sorts out the ways of expression, inheritance paths and development concepts as well as the problems and dilemmas in the process of shifting from a folk “self-contained” development model to an ontological cultural “self-motivated” construction.
