There are two theories that describe the function of self-esteem, Terror-Management Theory and Sociometer Theory. Both theories have ample research supporting their claims. In study one, participants will be given directions to either write about social fears about death or physical fears about death. Participants will also be provided pamphlets recommending eating healthy for either social or longevity reasons. The dependent variables will include measures of affect, state self-esteem, and healthy eating habits and intentions scale. In study two, participants will be asked to write about a time when they were either socially excluded or socially included before experiencing a traditional death salience manipulation. The dependent variables will include a measure of affect, state self-esteem, and intentions to use sunscreen. While data presented does not support the research hypotheses, the discussion provides information that can be used in future directions.
