Random Thoughts, a collection of Ba Jin's essays, was written from December 1978 to August 1986. It has had a great and continuous effect on readers. This paper regards Random Thoughts as a text of thought history in literary form from the view point of thought history, explores the developing process of writer's thoughts in the text and his thoughts from the May Forth period to the end of the Cultural Revolution. In the meanwhile, the article analyses the mutuality between the Random Thoughts text and the course of the Thought Liberation in the New Era, and explains the thought diffusion of the text and its significance in our spiritual life. The finding suggests the thought history value of Random Thoughts hasn't been brought into play yet, it is possible for the text to play an active role in the ideological construction in the future.Random Thoughts is an important text that is unable to be ignored in discussing Ba Jin's historical significance. But in the past research, it was usually regarded as a literature text, its significance in literary history was emphasized. The research from thought history view point in the past only paid attention to the induction of texts'theme, but neglected the study of the relationship between texts and thought history. So we must strengthen the analysis of intertextuality, and apply the method of Communication Study and spiritual practice research in Random Thoughts research.Random Thoughts is not only the summarization of Ba Jin's experience of thinking and creating throughout his life, but also the summarization of the intellectuals'ideas from the May Forth to the New Era, so it has private and public characteristics. It follows the May Forth ideas, then adjusts them to the New Enlightenment context. Ba Jin's constructing of ego structure and modernity discoursing was profoundly influenced by the thought history after the May Forth. In his ego structure, the abstract ego suppresses the conscious ego. Though he has returned his own concrete experience of ego in writing these essays, he ultimately reconstructs his new objective ego in texts. His revolutionary modernity discourse results from the inevitable development of the May Forth intellectuals'modernity discoursing. The modernity discoursing in Random Thoughts takes a moderate culture gesture, from historic rationality to elementary rationality. It attaches importance to the private moral practice and wants to remedy the defect of radical modernization through the construction of public ethical order.
